Description
It’s called a high clearance, vertical-lift railroad bridge, and was built in 1913. The Snowden Bridge spans the Missouri River Between Roosevelt and Richland Counties in Montana. The War Department required the lift span for large steamboats when the river was navigable so far north. When the Fort Peck Dam was being built in the 1030’s, there was a need to lift the bridge to allow barges carrying construction materials upstream to pass. The span was last raised in 1935. In 1925 a plank roadbed was built for one-way vehicular and foot traffic, while the bridge continued to be used by the Great Northern Railroad. A 1981 study found that the bridge was “so dangerous that it was safe” because drivers were extraordinarily cautious when crossing.
